Teddy bear toys
Often parents hesitate at buying certain kinds of toys
– like teddy bear toys – for their children because they
are afraid of what kind of allergic reaction the child might have to
one of the bears. Despite this trepidation, the fact is that parents
can buy bears for children fairly easily thanks to the fact that there
are some teddy bears especially made for children who suffer from allergies.
A parent who wants to buy teddy bear toys for a child with allergies
should:
• Understand the science – A parent must
first understand the severity of a child’s allergies and make
sure all of the allergies have been identified. For example, some children
have allergic reactions to mold, pollen, dander, dust mites or all of
the above.
• Hypoallergenic materials – The teddy
bear toys that are ultimately purchased for a child with allergies should
be made of hypoallergenic ingredients. This means that these bears are
not nearly as easily found as the bears in most toy stores are. There
are two bears created by Manhattan Toys – Barton Bear and Oatmeal
Bear – that are sold specifically to benefit the Allergy and Asthma
Network.
• Durability is important – When one of
these bears is chosen, it is important that the bear is well made and
durable. Children who are allergic need to have teddy bear toys that
can be washed often and hold up to the wear and tear of being washed.
